Prague - Monday 19th February 2018 - SatoshiLabs today announced the release of an entirely new communication tool to facilitate the connection between your TREZOR Cryptocurrency Hardware Wallet and your internet browser. While the application only serves one purpose and you will not see it or hear about it once you install it, it is worthy of announcement for several reasons.
The Bridge is rewritten from scratch, using a more modern code, meaning it is faster, more secure, and more reliable. The new Bridge is also the first part of the transition away from Chrome apps. Google is phasing out all Chrome applications towards the end of 2018, which means that the very popular TREZOR Chrome extension will become obsolete. Therefore, we will have to rely on different communication channels for TREZOR. The old Bridge would remain functional, but we decided to update the application to boost compatibility and to provide a fallback option.
So what does this mean for TREZOR users?
This is the first phase of the transition away from Chrome apps.
Updates are optional unless you are a new TREZOR user.
If you are currently using TREZOR Chrome extension, you do not need to do anything yet. You may choose to delete the extension and let the Walletinstall the new Bridge if you want to be ready for the later parts of the transition.
If you are currently using the old TREZOR Bridge, you do not need to do anything yet. You may choose to install the new Bridge, which will replace the former application, if you want to be ready for the later parts of the transition.
If you are a new user, the Wallet will ask you to install the Chrome extension or the new TREZOR Bridge. You can still use either, but we suggest you choose the Bridge. Then, no further actions will be required from you.
If you do not know what to do, don’t worry, you don’t have to do anything. The TREZOR Wallet will ask you automatically once the transition is mandatory.
What happens to the TREZOR Chrome extension?
In the following weeks, SatoshiLabs will start the next phase of the transition. From the subsequent release of TREZOR Wallet, the Chrome extension will no longer be provided. It will remain functional for those who have installed it before, but the TREZOR Wallet will prompt you to install the new TREZOR Bridge.
If you choose to install the new Bridge today, no further actions will be required from you.
